Will old Whirlpool dishwasher still work?

The dishwasher in my kitchen is a Whirpool from 1987, and I haven't used it since 2006. Is there an easy way to tell if it is still working? I don't want to cause a flood in the basement. Ideas?

The only way I know is to turn it on assuming it's all hooked up.

I predict it will leak badly, be prepared with towels under the unit and a drip pan if possible.
The towels should absorb most of the water if it does leak, the leak should not be major or catastrophic.
Just be prepared to turn the unit off once you see water and also ensure the valve to the water supply line still functions before you start the test.

Edit: Warning... There are intentionally ungrounded electrical components under the dishwasher. Place towels under unit with power off, then test. Clean up under the unit with power off after testing.
