Washing Machine Valves Safe to use?

I live in an apartment in which I never really looked at the washer/dryer hook ups until now as I finally bought a set. However, I noticed what appears to be mold all over and inside the valves. I have provided pics for your review. Are these safe to use? My fear is that these dirty, crusty looking valves will allow mold to get into my new washing machine and ruin it. What should I do? Do the valves need to be replaced or can I use them?

Welcome to the forums.

Although the valves are old.... they will be ok. Mix up some warm water, a little dish soap and some bleach and wash the area with an old brush. The grime will wash down the drain hole.

I don't even think it's mold, just lint and crud buildup from over the years. Notice how the right one (cold) seems to have more? Because it gets cool and probably sweats a bit so it attracts more dust. Ever look at the valves in an old laundromat? Yech!

To set your mind at ease you could hook up your hoses, set the end in a bucket and turn the valve on. I'm sure you will see clean water fill the bucket.
