Maytag washer agitation cycle noisy

I have a Maytag washer model #LAT5000AAL that is 26 years old. When it is in the agitation cycle it makes a loud clunking noise. In the spin cycle its fine. I pressed the button in that would normally shut the cycle down with the lid open. It looks to be agitating like normal. I can move the agitator both ways about the same distance when there are no clothes or water in there. I took the front panel off and watched it in the agitation cycle and I couldn't see anything that looked out of balance. I don't know how to take the agitator off to see what's going on underneath.

I have found water pumps making noise before. Most likely Transmission or brake assy. I think brake takes a special tool to work on.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think it may be time for a new washer.
