GE top loading washer leaking

Hi, and best to everyone
Our high efficiency washing machine leaks out the tub down the shaft, and also is making a knocking sound on spin. There's a few Youtube videos showing replacement of the seal and the bearing. Looks doable. Should both bearing and seal be replaced? And are there any other parts to get and replace at the same time? Also, those videos show using a spanner wrench on the large nut; does anyone know the size of that nut or is purchasing the wrench the best way to go?

Thanks, as always, for the great input.

Yes doable, Nut is aluminum and can be cut out if stuck. Nut is left hand thread. Have done many that way.MY list of parts from sears site 324, 325, 313, 315, 311, 322, 309, 314. May not need all these but at one time or other I have needed them all. 309 bearing is probably the least needed part. Had one on my truck for 10 years and only replaced 1 and it was not needed.

Looking over that parts list. If you didn't replace that bearing, what was causing the knocking noise, or some describe it as grinding. It's an ugly noise !! Thx

Unplug pump and see if noise goes away. Something under basket?

Hello, I finally got around to this one, got the big nut off and cant lift the tub off the shaft, don't think it's because I'm not strong enough. The video on the parts web site has it lift right out, but mine won't budge. Suggestions? Many thanks !!

Dreaded soap scum. Been years since I have taken one apart so may have mixed machines but did you take all the bolts that hold basket in out. What is holding basket to shaft is nothing but old soap scum that is almost impossible to get out.
The basket should unbolt and come out but the center hub which you need off will still be there. no real help from other than keep soaking with PB Blaster working it. I don't know of any pullers for that.

so, it came apart, seal looked bad, lot of rust, but the tub itself (plastic) where the seal actually sits is out of round. i put a clamp on it and let it sit for an hour and it looked pretty round again. new seal installed. leaks worse than before.

I always replaced split ring but that was because I had them on truck. If ring looks good not necessary but if you have to order parts get it. We always glued seal in with yellow glue from auto parts store. Be sure to clean ALL soap scum . Does the tub look round when you put seal in? did you clean the shaft seal goes through? Trying to think of anything that has happened to me. After you put seal in let glue dry about a hour than just pour enough water into tub to see if it leaks. Don't put anything more back together till you try this.Just make sure all drains are closed with a hose or plug.
