Kenmore Elite Upright Freezer not cooling/working properly

Need your advice. Not exactly sure what is going on with my freezer. It doesn't turn on the freezer to cool down by itself. I had to turn up the dial and then it will kick start the compressor. It will work for a while and then the next morning it will stop completely until I dial the temp again. The temperature feels cool but if I don't do it often, everything inside the freezer will melt. Is it the temp controller/thermostat or thermistor? Not sure what else could be the issue. Freezer is probably more than 10 years old. Need new refrigerant? Hope to get some pointers and help.

Thanks!

A model number would be useful.
I cannot tell you how the unit is controlled without a model number!!!!

If it is a mechanical thermostat that could be the problem.
it is not uncommon for them to get stuck open.
Then as soon as you adjust the knob the unit kicks on.

If you can keep it frozen by continually adjusting the temperature then the freon/sealed system should be OK.

Yes that is a model number.
If you go to the Sears parts site it comes up.
https://www.searspartsdirect.com/mod...-freezer-parts
It is actually made by Frigidaire.

It uses a mechanical thermostat.
So that is the most likely culprit.
If the unit starts up again by just tapping the thermostat or turning it down a bit then this makes the odds of this even higher.
If yes to the above I would replace the thermostat!!!
