Whirlpool dishwasher problem
I have a whirlpool dishwasher that’s like 5 years old. It will start running but just shuts off. It will pump water out but doesn’t drain water out. Water just sits in bottom. I cleaned filters all out and that did nothing.

A model number would be helpful.
"It will pump water out but doesn’t drain water out." is confusing.
The only way when a unit is properly installed to drain water out is to pump it out.
How long does it run before shutting off.
Need more info!!!!

Have you tried unplugging or turning the breaker off for a couple minutes to see if it will reset?

Dishwashers functions are started and stopped by a timer unless a safety feature (like unlocking the door or wand stuck) is detected. The pump-out function is at the end of the wash cycle. The pump-in function is at the start of the wash cycle and stops when the level sensor is satisfied (not the timer). This function takes at least a minute. Need clarification on your statement "Runs for a couple seconds" .

Also what cycle types have you tried?
Is the overflow switch activated?
How much water is in the tub?
Do you have the tech sheet for the unit?
Often it is stuck to the back of the kick plate.

Tried sensor cycle, normal and one hour cycle. About an inch of water in bottom. When I start the dishwasher it starts spraying water and pumping .then shuts off and won’t do anything

The tech sheet may be useful to you.
Take a look for it.
I no longer have access to the Whirlpool service site so the below is not 100% guaranteed.
I think the tech sheet is W10904613
You should be able to find it on the internet.
How do you get the unit to re-start?

Sounds like something is shutting it down.
Could be a sensor or a fault on the control board.
Diagnostics might help.

I would clean the contacts/plugs in that circuit with electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.
Use a toothbrush.
Also inspect the connections for poor wire to pin connections.
