Maytag washer burning smell

Wife told me the washer had a burned smell, had her cut it off and it was full of water. I assumed pump had went bad so i pulled the pump out when i got home but I can spin it fine in my hand. So not sure if that is the issue or not. Model HAV4657aww. It has the original belt on it as well.

Typically when you smell burning.... it's the belt slipping.

I can turn the motor and the drum with my hand. The belt also seems fine. I ordered a replacement pump but i can also turn the old one with it out of the machine. I am guessing the smell is as you say from the belt slipping, just unsure why it was.

so thought it was water pump, replaced that and filled up washer and when it started to agitate it started making a squeaky noise and then it sounded like a grinding noise. guess transmission or a bearing is going bad. not sure if thats worth the hastle to fix.
