re: Kenmore Progressive vacuum

All,

We have a 2000 model Kenmore progressive vacuum which has problems recently. I should say that it works fine but within 3-4 mins., I would get a burning smell. I changed the spare belt provided by removing the agitator etc. Now I wonder what else could be the problem. The bags are clean and it vacuums pretty well for the 3-4 mins. when it is ON. Any solution other than don't vacuum beyond 3-4 mins would be great.

thanks.......

If it is a rubber burning smell and you have replaced the belt, then it may be that old flecks of the broken belt are still in the chamber or the beater bar (agitator) is going bad.

Take the beater bar out and clean out the chamber. Old pieces of the broken belt may be knocking around in the chamber and creating more burning rubber odor. While the beater bar is out of the vacuum, try to spin it. If the beater bar shows a lot of resistance to turning, then the bearings may be going bad. If the bearing are going bad, then the beater bar won't turn and the belt will slip against the agitator shaft and burn up.

If it is an electrical smell, then it could be any number of problems, including the motor going bad.

Smile beater bar

Also check and remove any strands of fibre, hair, etc.from either end of beater bar(between end of beater bar and bearing)that can build up and act like the breakes on your car;the more that builds up the mor it binds the rotator brush. G'luck
