New Microwave: Can I Exceed the Max Cabinet Depth?

I just bought a Samsung MC17J8000CS/AA and am attempting to install it.

In the install guide, which looks generic to all Samsung micros and not specific to this model, it lists a maximum cabinet depth of 12". My cabinets are 12.5" without the doors, 13.5" with.

The thing is, I don't see the conflict. There are no openings, spaces, vents, or anything on the casing until you reach 14" from the back of the unit (there are vent slats at that point on the top of the unit).

Is anybody aware of any other issues that may come into play where I cannot exceed the 12"? I don't see any but wanted to check with others first.

The only thing I can think of is that you may need to fill in under the cabinets where the microwave is mounted so that the microwave sits flush with the bottom of the cabinets.

 

Hi PJmax. So I am talking about wall to front of cabinet depth... not top to bottom.

 

Yes.... I realize that. Does the microwave attach to the bottom of the cabinet ? If so.... that would be the determining factor in depth from wall. Many times the face of the cabinet is lower(reveal) then the bottom causing a mounting issue.

 

I see where the manual says 12" maximum. Is the bottom of the cabinet flat ?

I've installed hundreds of these from all manufacturers and there is no reason you can't go 12.5"

If anything, you cannot go shallower than 12" unless you want the upper mounting bolts through the face frame, which is not ideal.
