Want to put convection oven on kitchen shelf, do I need a heat shield?

My kitchen doesn't have much counter space, so I'm exploring the idea of moving the convection/toaster oven from the counter to an open shelf below a cabinet. Ideally, I'd like to use it while it's on the shelf, not just store it there. Though the oven fits in the space, there would only be a few inches to spare all around. Since the oven gets pretty warm, I wonder if any experienced folks here recommend some sort of heat shielding for the surrounding surfaces (painted drywall behind the oven, wood cabinets above and on each side). If a heat shield is recommended, what kinds of easily customizable materials would work best?

The problem is even with some type of heat shielding it's still tight with no place for the heat to go. It doesn't sound like a good idea to me based on the amount of heat those things generate.

This doesn't sound like a good idea to me either. Built in Microwaves and Convection Ovens require a "trim kit" that includes a base and channels to direct the cooling fan air out the front of the opening. I doubt if your oven would have a trim kit available for purchase.

If you post the model number, the installation instructions can be checked for allowed minimum clearances.

After looking at the specific dimensions of the space this evening, I think you're both right. This isn't going to work, for a few reasons. Plus, I didn't realize how much heat the thing puts out until I paid attention to it while in use this evening. So, back to the drawing board in terms of how to use the space.

Originally, there was an over-the-range microwave here. It broke but the wife decided we didn't need to replace it. Fair enough, but now I'd like to see how I can make use of this space. I can get a ductless hood range for a light and some basic cook-air filtration (there's no vent to the outside here), but it'd be great if I could add some shelf space as well.

This boils down to how much money you want to spend.
There are over the range microwave/vent hood plus convection ovens available, I'm very happy with mine.
All are capable of recirculation mode and all are shipped in that configuration, if you want to vent to the outside the blower assembly must be rotated. In recirculation mode a charcoal filter is available and recommended but many aren't aware of that. It's not great but helps if changed every 6 months or so.
A normal Microwave Hood combo should be on a dedicated 20amp circuit, the microwave convection oven definitely needs to be on a dedicated circuit.

I forgot to mention that any wooden shelf over the range needs to be at least 30" above the cooking surface.

Thanks. I installed a hood but am now concerned about a new problem. I posted that issue in a more appropriate section.
