Vacuum smells like farts after using it for protein powder spill

Made the mistake of picking up half a container's worth of protein powder that my son spilled on the floor with our indoor carpet vacuum cleaner (and by "my son," I mean me). Now the vacuum smells awful when its turned on. I was thinking of sucking up a can of ajax or some other type of powder cleaner and let it sit in the guts of the vacuum for a couple of days. Is that a terrible idea? Anyone have another suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

Yes..... that would be a terrible idea.

The biggest problem with most vacuums is that really fine dust is drawn thru the filter and passed on thru the motor. The motor uses that airstream to stay cool. Unfortunately the motor heat and the brushes cause the dust to heat up, burn and smell.

A powdered cleaner passed thru the motor will probably ruin it.

Try leaving the vacuum open..... bag removed for a couple of days and see it that helps.

If you are the adventuresome type you might be able to take the unit all apart and then use high pressure compressed air to blow all the dust from the motor and housing. You would have to do the blowing outside, of course and be careful to not damage anything during the process. You need a high pressure blast, a "compressed air" spray can won't cut it.

Is it a tank vacuum? Some of them have 2 filters on different sides of the bag. Make sure that you replace them.

Have you replaced the bag? Our vacuum will emit an offensive odor after sucking up lady bugs but emptying and cleaning the canister rectifies that.
