What cylndrical part is this and what is it's use ?

I have Budd central vaccum in my house. I replaced it's motor and while replacing motor a cylinder shape plastic structure attached to PVC pipe on both ends got little moved . I feel it is kinda displaced or may be i broke it at the ends where PVC pipe attaches.
I'm not sure if this is how wiggled it was before or happened when I was replacing motor.

Can someone please tell me what this cylindrical part is and what is the use of it ?

That round device in the "exhaust to outside" line is a muffler.
It's location is not critical. It looks fine.

I'm not familiar with whole house vacuum systems. But if were to guess I would say possibly a filter or a separator of sorts. Does it come apart? At first I was going to say insulation or possibly a piece to keep it apart from adjourning pipe to prevent vibration.
