Outside fixture box

Can I replace the current 1/2" metal fixture box on the exterior wall with the plastic blue round "old construction" box for an outside fixture? The 1/2" box doesn't give me enough room for the connections and get the fixture flush to the wall. Thanks.

sberry27: thanks for the quick response. Just to be sure, currently the ground from the source wire is connected to the fixture ground wire, and a pigtail from this to the box. When you say "ground the fixture", does that mean to keep the connection from source ground wire to fixture ground wire, and forget the pigtail to the box?
Thanks.

Yes.
The old grounds both the box and the fixture. Since the new boc is old work plastic, grounding the box has no function (the essence is in grounding the elec device).
