Question

Our house was built in 1965. Sometime later (don't know when) an A/C system was installed. Now every time the A/C comes on, all the lights flicker for about a second. Could this be a bad sign? Do I need to do something?

hello will,
there could be several things going on here.
1. a loose connection(panel or ac circuit)
2. a service that is close to max size
3. unbalanced load.
whin a motor starts ther is a large amount of current draw for a fraction of a sec, this could be the cause of your problem if the panel is unbalanced.

Cool

Try replacing the light bulb that flickers. Use a higher grade of bulb. Some lower (cheaper) grades of lamps show this flicker more than the better brands.

Good Luck. RM

1965? Isn't that about the time of aluminum wiring? If so, I would check for that as a possible cause and a condition that needs to be addressed.
