Question

my ceiling fan is working fine, but when i tried today to retrofit a light kit to it, the light did not work. i checked the voltage across the blue and white wires from the fan to the light kit, and the voltage was half what it should be, or 55-60V. what is this about? thanks in advance!

Hi Old Man,

Since there was not a light there at the time the fan was hung, that person probably did not connect the blue wire to the hot feed in the ceiling box.
What you are reading is some feedback voltage from the fan which uses a common neutral.
Pull down the canapy and see if this is correct.
