Old wiring

I have old wiring in my house we just moved inot and was wondering how this was replaced? The 1st floor is ok but the 2nd floor wiring is ancient. How do i get the old wiring out and put the new in do i have to ripp the walls aprat or can i simply shut off the power and disconnect the old wiring at both ends( switch to light etc) and attach my new wiring to the end and pull it through? Thanks for any help

if the old woiring is not stapled to the walls then yes you can tie new wire on and hopefully pull it through if it is stapled then you may have to just cut out the old and try to fish the new wire down from the attic by getting over the old outlet and tie a small rope to the end of a fishing weight and the wire on other end drop weight down and then fish it through the old outlet box

My place is 120 years old, and I also have old wiring on the 2nd fl. I plan to bust the walls out. If your wiring is "knob & tube, as mine is, there are invariably ceramic insulators which clamp onto the wire to hold it in place between the walls. It's not going to move for you. One trick I have used is to go into the attic above a wall I know to be hollow vertically and drill a 3/4" whole, drop a string & sinker down and fish it out in the basement. I attached the new romex to it and pulled it up and across the attic, then dropped down to the wall box and pulled it out there. I know, it's easier said than done, and I don't know your house at all. Just be resourceful and creative and you'll get there.
