Cat 5 for sprinklers

We have been using Cat 5 telephone/computer wire
to control our yard sprinklers. Because we have it in stock.
Any thoughts on this?

Hi bukzin

No-one seems to have an answer for you in Lawns, so lets try in Electrical...

Cat 5's insulation probably isn't rated for waterproofness, Sprinkler selinoid's are 24 volts? How many amps? How far away are they? That little 24 ga wire won't carry many amps very far...

If you've considered all this then there shouldn't be a problem.....

I'd certainly use a 14 ga direct burial cable and never have to worry for the couple penny's extra it would cost
