single light switch to double switch.

i have a light switch that i want to change to a double switch. i bought a "double" switch, the kind that has two switches (one above the other). and then got to thinking about it, how hard would it be to remove the whole box and put in a double box with two seperate switches? i would have to remove the old box, how?, and replace it with a double box.

the current box is pretty packed with wires, not sure i could fit two extra sets of wires for a double switch.

It's not hard. If you current box is "pretty packed", the a double-gang box is likely a good idea. The old box can probably be gently pried away from the stud, then you can enlarge the hole and put in a double-gang old-work box.
