Burnt out emmersion timer

Help! My emmersion timer started smoking and so I turned it off at the switch above. I want to fit a new one and would like to know if there are any tips for making sure that this does not happen again.

Help! Help! I don't recognize your term emersion timer. Can you explain what you are calling an emersion timer and what equipment it controls. Then I might be of some help to you. We might get lucky and find one of the other people trying to help that can help you and help me. I just don't recognize the term emersion timer.
