ceiling light fixture

i want to install a ceiling light fixture in my living room and have it wired to a switch already in place on the wall that currently runs an outlet. can i do this? or would i need to run new wiring?

That a little depends on how many wires are in the switch box,,, or if you can get a wire from the outlet box to the new location. Find the breaker to that circuit and turn off,,, pull switch out and let us know how many wires are in the box and how they are connected.

ok,i figured out how to get the back off the box. there are 3 large white wires (black, white, copper inside) going into the box, 2 from the bottom and 1 from the top. the one on the top goes to the outlet, i believe one on the bottom goes to the switch next to it for the outside light.

It sounds like you need to get a wire to the outlet would be the best bet. You may have some wire congestion to deal with there but you certainly have a source to get it from. Is the outlet you want to get more power from in that same box? Lets wait for a master to come along and give a bit more advice.
