sub-panel in the garage

I have a sub-panel for the my detached garage with a 4 inch pipe connecting the two. I have a 5HP compreser, table saw, MIG welder, and other power tools to run. With the garage on one 12/2 line the light go out when the compreser turns on. What size wire should I run to the sub-panel? (12/3, 8/3, other)

To give you a good answer, we'd need the electrical specs on all those things you mentioned, and some sort of indication as to whether you ever run more than one of these tools at the same time. As a rough guess, I'd say that an 8/3 with a 40-amp breaker or a 6/3 with a 50 amp breaker would probably be enough. Make sure you have grounding rods.
