Electrical wiring

I AM HARD WIRING A SUMP PUMP TO A SWITCH RECEPTICLE. THE PUMP IS 3 WIRE. I HAVE A RECPTICLE BOX WITH A GFI 2 GANG SWITCH AND WIRED TO THAT IS ANOTHER 2 GANG RECEPTICLE.

I AM TAKING OUT THE 2 GANG AND REPLACING IT WITH A SWITCH AND A SINGLE RECEPTICLE.

THE 2 GANG IS NOW WIRED WITH BLACK HOT TO THE TOP LEFT BLACK SCREW, THE WHITE COMMON TO THE BOTTOMO COMMON SCREW AND THE GREEN GROUND TO THE GROUND SCREW.

I WANT THE SWITCH TO WORK THE PUMP AND THE RECEPTICLE TO BE HOT AS WELL.

ON MY NEW SWITCH I HAVE THE TWO BLACK HOT SCREWS AND UNDERSTAND I TAKE MY HOT LEAD FROM THE BOX TO THE TOP SCREW ON THE RECEPTICLE. I ALSO UNDERSTAND TO TAKE THE GREEN GROUND FROM THE BOX TO THE GROUND ON THE RECEPTICLE.

WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHERE TO HOOK UP THE COMMON OUT OF THE BOX OR WHJERE TO HOOK UP THE COOM AND THE HOT FROM THE PUMP.

IF I WAS TO GUESS, I'D HOOK THE BLACK FROM THE PUMP TO SAME SCREW I HAVE THE HOT LEAD FROM THE BOX OR PIGTAIL THEM TOGETHER AND THEN TO THE RECEPTICLE. THEN I'D TAKE THE COMMON FROM THE BOX AND PLUG IT BOTTOM OF THE NEW SWITCH AND RUN A WIRE FROM THE TOP SCREW AND THE BOTTMO SCREW AND PIG TAIL THOSE TWO WITH MY PUMP WHITE COMMOM..

AM I CLOSE?

Switch:

I know your post is clear, but confuses me to read it, Might just be me thou.
I'm going to start over, and try using the same terms you used. So hope not to confuse you.
Hot from box to top of switch, also to copper screw of Recpt. Good place for pigtail.
Common of box to silver screw of Recpt.
Ground to both green screws (one Switch, One Recpt.)
Hot (black) of pump to bottom of switch.
Common of pump to other silver screw of Recpt.
Ground of pump to ground of others in box, good place for pigtail.
Things to look for is attaching the standed wire to the terminales should be done with approved terminals (fork spades) are good.
If box is metal ground it to.

Hope this helps

The problem is I have with trying to help you is that you and I don't use the same set of terminology. So before we start, I need to understand how you are using some of those terms.

(1) The term "SWITCH RECEPTICLE" is unclear to me. Is this a switch, a receptacle, or a combo device with one of each?

(2) You say "THE PUMP IS 3 WIRE." Does this mean that there are three wires coming out of the pump, one hot, one neutral and one ground? Does the pump run on 120 volts or 240 volts?

(3) You say "I HAVE A RECPTICLE BOX WITH A GFI 2 GANG SWITCH." I've never heard of a "GFI switch", and I'm also not sure what a "2 gang switch" is. By a 2-gang switch, do you mean a duplex switch (i.e., two switches in the usual space of one)? Finally, I'm not sure why you called this a "RECEPTICLE" box if it contains a switch -- can we call this a "switch box"?

(4) You say "WIRED TO THAT IS ANOTHER 2 GANG RECEPTICLE". Is this in the same box as the switch, or is this in another box? By "2 GANG RECEPTICLE", do you mean an ordinary duplex receptacle -- the most common receptacle in most homes?

(5) You say that you want to "HARD WIRE" the pump. Does the pump currently have a cord and plug? Are you planning to cut off the plug? Why don't you just plug it in?

(6) You say "PIGTAIL THEM TOGETHER". Do you mean by that that you will take a wire nut and connect the two wires to each other?

(7) When you use the word "COMMON", are you referring to the white wire?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.. I THINK I GOT WHAT I NEEDED FROM 'APHARES'.. BUT I HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION... YOU SAID TO TAKE THE COMMOM FROM THE BOX TO THE SILVER SCREW ON THE RECEPTICLE.. THEN YOU SAY TAKE THE COMMOM FROM THE PUMP TO THE OTHER SILVER SCREW ON THE RECEPTICLE..

I HAVE ONLY ONE SILVER SCREW.. SO WOULD IT WORK TO PIG TAIL BOTH THE BOX AND PUMP COMMONS TO THE SINGLE SILVER SCREW?

Thank you Arthur... Just case you didn't have a clear picture of what I am calling the recepticle I'll try to describe it for you..

There is a on/off switch on the top half and a three pronged plug on the bottom. My goal is to have the switch work the pump and still have tghe plug work should I need it...

Looking at the recepticle there are two black screws on the left side and the are tied together by a removeable tab.

On the right side on the top is the brass screw, in the middle is the ground and on the bottom is the silver screw.

If I have understood and followed your instructions correctly I have pig tailed the top left black screw and the brass screw on the top right and tied them to the box hot wire. I will tehn take the pump black wire to the lower left black screw.

Then I will take the box ground and pump ground and pig tail those together and go to the ground screw.

Finally I will pig tail the box common and the pump common and put them to the silver screw.

Hope I didn't make more of this than necessary and thank you for your prompt responses...

Cliff
