Romex in a range hood?

I am having a new range hood put in. It will be suspended from the ceiling. The wiring for that range hood will be a dedicated circuit of 12/2 Romex. The Romex comes from the basement and goes up through a wall behind the range, and then enters the range hood from the top. The Romex then drops down about two feet to enter the part of the hood where all the connections will be made. Is Romex OK for this application?

Romex must be protected from physical damage. If this two feet is not in an exposed area, and if there are no sharp edges that may damage it, then the Romex is probably okay (assuming that Romex is allowed at all in your city).
