Smoke Detectors

Smoke Detectors

Couple of questions on smoke detectors wired in series.

1) Do they have to all be on the same circuit?
2) Do they have to all be on the same circuit even if they are on different floors?
3) Can any other fixture / receptacle be on the same circuit as the smoke detector?

Thanks,

abkent

A 14/3 runs between them all,,, same circuit,, and they can be on their own or hooked to a lighting circuit provided the lights are on a 15A breaker.

Remeber, if you local jurisdiction has accepted the 2002 code, you must put the bedroom stuff (recept. and other electrical boxes) on a AFCI breaker.

my local inspector told me that they cannot be on own circuit due to cutting power at breaker. he made me put mine on the light circuit so if breaker pop the light would be off.

Smokes:

The have to be installed all on the same circuit, because of the interconnection wiring between them (3 conductor). They also have to be battery back-up. They may share a circuit, but what I have seen to many times is their electronics don’t much care for power consumption from other devices, and this creates a "chirp" every time a switch or app. ext. is turned on.

I agree with aphares,, if your insp wants them on a lighting circuit put them on a lightly loaded one.
