wire gage

I would like to know if it's ok to use #6 wire with ground with a 40 amp breaker for my stove. I was going to use #8 wire with ground but the run is 70 feet. The specs say to use a 40 amp breaker but say nothing about what gage wire to use.Thank you for your help.
