Question Installing new electrical outlet???

Hello all-

I just bought my first house and noticed that there are no electrical outlets in the half bathroom. I would like to put one outlet in it, in order to place a lamp, etc there.

What are the steps I go through to put in a new outlet and how do I use Romex wire to connect to existing electricity? There is an overhead light fixture in the bathroom, how do I tie into that? Is it just a "splicing two wires together" type thing?? I have all the hardware needed, I just don't know how to wire the electricity to the new outlet.

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

You're caught in a trap.

To add a receptacle in a bathroom, you would be required to conform to today's code, no matter when your house was built. To conform to today's code, you would not be allowed to extend any existing circuit into the bathroom. And it's unlikely that using the bathroom lighting circuit would be acceptable either.

Probably the only code-conformant way to do this is to run a new circuit from the panel just for this one receptacle.

Just curious, but in what year was your house built?
