outlet dead

One of our outlets just went dead on us. I tested it and there is no power going to it at all. I changed the outlet to a new one first. I've tested the lights, outlets and switches all around it with no luck. It is not a GFI.

Any suggestions?

Even a receptacle that is not a GFCI receptacle can have a GFCI problem.

Exactly where is this non-working receptacle?

What do you mean by "with no luck"? Do the things around this work or not work? Or do you mean you were unable to conduct the tests for some reasons?

What kind of tester are you using?

I had a major brain fart!!! The plug in was in the back bathroom. I checked everything around it and they all worked fine. Then I thought about the GFI thing again and remembered that the front bathroom had one. I went in, reset it, and what do you know? It worked. I'm sorry for the waste of your time. You guys are great.

replacing knob and tube-partially

My basement has several pull-cord incandescent lamps on a single knob and tube circuit. The circuit also feeds one or more outlets in the room above. I would like to replace the lamps with flourescents and switch them to a single two-way switch located by the basement entrance. also, the splices in the knob and tube were done poorly-they just scraped off the insulation, tied up the wires and covered them in tape. so it seems to me that instead of trying to correct the splicing problems it may make sense for me to replace the circuit in the basement with romex and splice it properly with junction boxes, etc. is it OK to replace the wiring (runs through exposed floor joists) where visible as it runs in from an wall above and out of a wall above with romex and leave the innaccessible portions knob and tube? I would also like to add on an exterior light fixture with exterior conduit to this circuit. Thanks, JoeRead More

Replacing Circuit Breaker

I know little about wiring and circuit breakers. I’ve done a fair amount of rewiring in my house, but I’ve run into something I don’t understand. Years ago, I removed all baseboard heaters in the house, and installed central heating. I did none of this work myself. The wires for the baseboard heaters were capped off, taped together with electrical tape, shoved into the little hold in the sheet rock, and then a plate to cover the hole was placed. I recently decided to make an outlet at one of these spots. I pulled the wire out of the wall, and it is just ordinary wire for wiring modern outlets, switches and so on. I put a tester on it, and it was dead, so I went ahead and wired it into a 3 prong outlet. Today I tried to find where the wire went, and I noticed a circuit breaker switch that was in the off position. This circuit breaker looks like two breakers with a bar across them so that they turn on and off together. Each is labeled 20 amps. On the door of the breaker box, the switch is labeled 230 volts. I turned this breaker on, plugged in a vacuum cleaner, the plug worked, but the vacuum cleaner made a horrible noise, and started smelling like it was burning. I turned off the breaker. Now, where do I go from here? Can I replace this twin breaker with one 30 (20?) amp breaker, and have the plug work normally? I replaced a breaker switch once before, but that was just replacing a worn out 30 amp breaker with a new one. Simple to do after I talked to someone who knew, but this one has me stumped.
