Wiring a ceiling fan red/black/white/ground

We are remodeling our living room and we removed a wall that had a switch for the ceiling fan (three way). I want to run the new wire right to a junction box and use the fan chains to turn on and off eliminating a wall switch. My question is the line from the fan has 4 wires black, white, bare and red. I am wiring into a line that is 3 wire, black, white, bare. What do I do with the red wire. I tried just capping it off but the fan still won't work. Help!!!!

Connect the red and black from the fan to the black from the ceiling box. The red and black from the fan are to operate the lights and fan separately on two wall switches. Also, this is the forum area for phone and communication wiring, the electrical section would get you faster answers in the future.

is this dangerous ?

My house main panel is 100 Amps. 240 V [ fused], there is a subpanel connected to it . The subpanel has 2 rows of 3 fuses each. A 12-2 BX is connected to one of the Main panel fuses [15 Amps] bringing 120 V to the sub.The hot is connected to one of the line screws[right side of subpanel] and neutral to N busbar] The left side is not connected. The hot side has only 2 fuses instaled 15 amps each . Each fuse has a short run of 14-2 going to a couple of junction boxes and out of each box again a couple of 14-2 branching out to 5 lights and two receptacles scatered in the basement. how to rewire with out damageing the old plaster ?

How do I rewire an old house without damageing the old plaster ? This is house is more then 100 years old ... It was wired in the late 20s or early 30s ..So it should have tube wireing . that is single insulated wire raped around insulaters set apart six inches or more for the people who do not know about tube wireing .. I do not want to damage the old plaster .. It has the old paint from the 30s on it . I am trying to keep this house as close to what it was as I can . The rewireing would be eazy otherwise ... Any help out there ? I can run the wires behined the base board in conduit then go up from there .but what about the swicht to light wires ? These have to go though the top plate but I would not be able to pull them becuse of the tube wireing . Or should I leave the tube wireing in place the is no fuse blowing any where .. everything works . .. Thank you :confused:Read More
