Dimming flourescent lights

Are flourescent light dimmable? I.E. 2- 4' fixtures that are switched.

You must buy a special ballast (one that indicates that it can be dimmed), and a special dimmer (one that indicates that it is for a fluorescent fixture). Neither ordinary fluorescent fixtures nor ordinary dimmers will work.

there are also some flourescent lights that are not dimmable.
for those that can, a dimming ballast is many times more $ than the whole fixture.

Figure minimum $90.00 per ballast, $50.00 per dimmer (from Grainger catalog, page 782).

Another option is to rewire the fixture with two ballasts and two switches, one for each lamp.

wall socket

We live in an older home. It still has the orginal cloth wrapped wiring. As you know this type of wiring has only 2 wires to it, 1-white, 1-black. The power comes up out of the basement to a switch the controls the outside porch light. HOWEVER, we are unable to get power to the wall socket. It too is controlled by a seperate switch, at the same site. If we connect the power directly to the wires leading to the wall socket we have power. So we know that the wires are intact there. But, how do we get both the outside light and the wall socket wired from the one source of power and both work. Thank you. DJRead More

No power to room but breakers okay

I'm a new homeowner so I'm not too verse on electrical stuff. Recently the third floor room shorted(?) when I replaced a light bulb. I thought that simply resetting the breakers would solve the problem. But to my surprise, none of the breakers were tripped. To be sure, I turned all the power off and on, but still no power to that room. (well, some of the outlets in the room work but I suspect they're on another circuit). Can anyone offer any advice or help? Do I need an electrician to come in or is this something I can easily repair myself. Thanks in advance.Read More
