add a receptical

i need to add a second receptical directly next to an existing one. It is a 15 amp, and has two wires. I have purchased a two receptical box. How would the second switch wire in conjunction to the original ?

Just use two short jumpers, one between a silver screw on each receptacle, and one between a brass screw on each receptacle. Then attach two pigtails to the grounding wire so you can ground each receptacle. Pack the wires very carefully.

You said the circuit was a two wire, Does that mean there is no ground? If not then installing a grounded three prong receptacle into the circuit could not be done with out a grounding conductor, or installing a two prong, or a GFCI. But to hook it up, take Johns advice.

Grounding Circuit

First, Thank you to evryone that has responded to my other questions..here's another one. The current SEP is a 100 A. and was installed in 1974. I do plan to upgrade it but as happens in projects, money is the issue and I am trying to take it one step at a time. The current gound wire appears to be a solid 6 ga. copper run from the SEP to the copper water piper that is the house water service line, between looking at the corrosion and looking at code, I plan to add a second ground outside the house. While I would like to put in a 8ft. ground rod, the soil here is either hard clay or extremely rocky, I doubt if I could get a rod down 8ft. Any suggestion for a alternate ground. Also, any idea where I can look at the NEC online??Read More

GCFI Problems

Trying to bring my kitchen up to code with a GFCI outlet, house is a 50's style ranch with metal cable and juntion boxes (brand new 200 AMP upgraded panel). Previous owner had replaced the outlets around the counter top with three prong but never installed a GFCI on them. Here is the issue, no matter where I install the GFCI outlet to protect the other outlets in the series only the GFCI will function. It will function correctly and trip when hitting the TEST button, but no other outlets associated with the GFCI will work a the same time - no power at all. Took the GFCI outlet out of the series (4 total outlets on 20 AMP breaker) and put a regular 20 AMP back in - everything works fine again. Tried reverising the load/line thinking perhaps something was incorrect but when putting the GFCI in that way it would constantly trip. Any suggestions on what might cause this? I also tried putting the GFCI as the 2nd outlet in the series, it worked fine but none of the other outlets would work at all, including the outlet which I thought was the LINE or the outlets on the LOAD side. I am stumped at this point and only know basic wiring, any help would be appreciated. Mike.Read More
