conduit or not

I'm installing 3 receptacles and a switch for an overhead light in my unfinished basement. Do I need to run my romex thru conduit up to the ceiling line, or isn't this necessary??

When you say "up to the ceiling line", do you mean from an existing outlet, or from the panel? Either way, it need to be protected. A quote frm NEC 2002 334.15 (C) "In unfinished basements. ...Calbes smaller that 6AWG shall be runn either through bored holes in joists or on running boards.

If you use conduit for protection of the cables and it isn't a closed system, 1/2 conduit can be used. Remember to use bushing to gaurd against chaffing.

The moral of the story is to protect the cable from everyday bumps, scrapes, and snagging.
