installing ceiling fan

I am installing a fan, were there was a single lite, my question is this, ... the power 14/2 cable is in the ceiling box, and Ive run 12/3 cable from there to the switch, what colors connect were in both locations?... the switch is a single, not two way one. any advice would be helpful. TY

Do you want to control both light and fan?

Fan only?
At fan connect power in black to switch black.
connect power in white to fan white.
Connect the switch red to the fan black.
cap switch white.
At switch , connect black and red to one to each screw on switch. cap off white.

Fan and light?
Connect fan white to power in white.
Connect switch white to power in black. Tape or marke the swich white with black marker.
Connect the red to the blue. (light power)
Connect the black to the fan black.
at the switch
mark the white wire black.
Connect 2 pigtails to the white wire.
Connect one pigtail to each switch.
Conncet the red to the light switch.
Connect the black to the fan switch.

Another problem I'm having is this..... I need to replace a main feed 12/2 from the meter box, as its old wiring and the cable orginally ran up a dividing wall up into the attic were it supplies power to kitchen lite, but I have taken the dividing wall away to open the kitch/dining room up. I.m pretty certain this cable comes directly from teh meter box as it is marked kitchen lites, is it possible somewere under the kitchen floor ( meter box is in basement) it might be supplying power elsewere?.. and I assume IF I turn the main breaker off it is safe to remove the circuit breaker for the kitchen lites and replace the old cable with the new one? any advice would be appreciated, thanksRead More

outlet won't reset

The other morning I was frying up bacon in our kitchen with an electric frying pan. Something must have overloaded the circuit and now the outlet does not work. Nor do 4 other outlets in the kitchen. To attempt to resolve this, I first went to the breaker box and expected to see a breaker tripped. However that was not the case. I then proceeded to check the GFIs in the kitchen and none of them were tripped either. There are 4 other outlets in the kitchen that are working fine that must be on a different circuit. I've tried to locate other GFIs in the house and outside the house but cannot find any. (There are two more in the kitchen both of which are working and are not tripped.) Is there anything else I might be missing that could be causing these four outlets to be inoperable? I did flip the breaker on both the kitchen circuits just to see if that would reset the outlets but it did not. This is a new house (3 yrs old). Any help would be greatly appreciated.Read More
