Wiring for a Dryer
#1

I recently purchased an older house and brought with me a 3 wire dryer that plugs into a 30 amp outlet that I have to add. Im going to add a GE Thick Double Pole 30 amp outlet to the main box (Crouse-Hinds) since there is a lot of space let in the box and run the wire to the new outlet. Is an 8-3 wire ok to use or should I be using something else? Is this a safe job? I have changed outlets and brekers before but havent tacklet anything like this. At least the box is close to the dryer so that helps.
Appreciate any advice! Thanks!

10/3 is standard wiring for a dryer (but you can use 8/3 if it strikes your fancy). It's a doable (never say "safe") job as long as you know that a panel is still dangerous even with the main breaker off, and you watch where you put your hands, and you torque the screws very tight, and you buy the correct breaker for the panel.
Before you plug it in, convert your 3-wire dryer to a 4-wire dryer (i.e., buy a new 4-wire dryer cord and remove the bonding strap on the dryer).

Hate to butt in but will anyway
John, I recently purchased a home and the 30 amp 3 prong 220 volt dryer circuit was wired with 10/2 with the black wire and white wire (taped black) to the breakers and the bare ground to the ground bus in the panel. Similar config. as an elec. water heater.
At the plug, the test lite lites up between "L" prong and slant prong1, "L" prong and slant prong2, and between slant prong 1 and 2. Is this kosher? Am I getting 220?
