How to - exterior porch light?

Maybe this shouldn't be as difficult as it seems...

All I want to do is add a porch light to my deck (actually two). I have books that show how to use an old work (retrofit) light box--the type with the "wings" that spin out to clamp the box to the wall. But, I'm dealing with new construction... I have full access to both sides of the wall.

Further, one of the lights will be mounted at the same height as the rim joist, so the above light box won't work.

What type of box should I be using? How do I handle the light that's at the same height as the rim joist?

Thanks in advance for the help...

There's no reason to use an old work box when you don't have old work. Just use a regular box, the kind that nails or screws to a framing member.

I suggest you find another height for your rim joist light (does a few inches make that much difference?). Or you can probably use a pancake box nailed to the rim joist (depending on what kind of finish material you are using over the rim joist). I suppose you could even cut a hole in your rim joist, but I don't think I would.
