Question Basic outlet and switch problem

I was rewiring my basement and the switch at the top of the stairs doesn't work now. When I flip the switch it causes the power to go out and trips the breaker. The trick is the constant power has to pass the light I'm trying to use with the switch on and go to other lights that have pull cords. I had very old wiring in this house and thought it would be good to replace it but obviously if I do it incorrectly I'll burn the house down.

I am sure the switch is a switch loop. In the first fixture one white wire going to the switch should be remarked and hooket to the black ones. the returning black wire should hook to the fixture.
