HELP!
I'm taking out an old light fixture in the bathroom and installing a new one. No big deal right...wrong! After taking out the old fixture, I noticed that there was a wire with a power outlet attached and it was attached to a red wire in the electrical housing. I'm assuming this was to create continuous power to that outlet. In putting in the new light, I connected the black to the black and white to white. I put the fuse back in it's spot and the light goes on, but the switch is in the off position! If I turn the switch to on, the fuse blows. I've tried reversing the white and black wires from the housing to the light but to no avail.
What do I need to do?!
Thank you and I'm sorry that I'm a moron.

There are two swithches, one for the light and the other for the exhaust fan. Hooked to the light switch is one black wire. There is a red wire in the housing, which was originally hooked to the switch, but I took it off. There are 3 white wires hooked together, not to anything else. That's pretty much it.
Any thoughts?

If I get this straight,at the light fixture box you have 1 red,1white,and 1 black wire.At the switch box,you have a switch with only 1 black wire on it with nothing else on the other screw. You also have a red wire at the switch box that you took off of the switch that is now not connected to anything.Am i right so far? What other wires are present at the switch box and how or what are they connected to?Have you changed anything else in the switchbox other than disconnecting 1 wire? The more precise you are with the description, the easier it will be for us to figure out the problem.

You've got it so far. I have not disconnected anything else from the switchbox other than the red wire which was connected to the bottom of the switch. The other wires in the box are...
- 2 black wires, one goes to the light switch, the other to a coupler connected to the exhaust fan
- 3 white wires connected to each other and nothing else. 2 of the wires come from the left side and one from the right side.
- 1 red wire from left side of box that is now disconnected from the bottom of the light switch.
I'm sorry for the confusion...my head is probably spinning as bad as your's is now!
Thanks

Try thiis....(power off of course)
At the switch box, hook the red wire back to light switch. At the light fixture, disconnect the black wire (the 1 from the box)from the light fixture and cap it off.Connect the black wire from the fixture to the red wire.Reinstall fuse and test.
Let me know if this works.

I can't show my face at Home Depot for another 48 hours...they've banned me due to stupidity. Once the ban is over I'll go and get a new switch. I'm just so pumped that the thing is working now I'm afraid to even look at it.
Thank you n1ist for the finishing touches.
