Question Knob and tube wiring

I have an old home, about 110 years old, I want to install a cieling fan in my living room, but I have the old knob and tube wiring. the circuit has only a few lights on it so I know it can handle the load. I opened the ceiling and there was only a small box designed to just hang a light off of it. do I need to install a box in the ceiling it make my connections in, or can I just tape them and mount my fan to a joist?

You need a box, either the one that's already there or a new one. The one that's there is probably not strong enough to support the weight of the fan, so either change the box or use something else to take the weight.
