changing location of 3-way switched light and adding a fan

Existing:Stairway - 3 way swith at bottom and top. Light fixture half way up stairs.

Want to do: Leave switches as is and remove existing light fixture. Install Ceiling fan in stairway with light kit. Want the light to utilize the 3 way and have seperate switch at top of stairs for fan.

You may or maynot be able to do this. first of all the ceiling box you want to put the fan on must be a UL rated box for fan installations. This is a new code requirement for new homes, so it depends on the age of your home. There are aftermarket boxes/hangers for this but may be difficult to install if you are fimilar with the installation. Second you probably do not have an addition "switch leg" in the ceiling box for controlling the fan separate from the light. This would force you to either add wiring or purchase a fan that would have a remote control that would not require additional wiring.

If the power goes to the light or the switch where you want to control the then you only to run a new wire from the light to the new switch. Otherwise you also need a new wire to the 2nd switch.
