Sub-panels
If Im running 2 circuits to a shed that is 25' from my house will the shed need a disconnect or panel in or on it? Im putting a dryer outlet and some lights in the shed. If I have 2 breakers from my house panel that feed the shed is this all Im required to have by the NEC? Thanks.

You are going to need a panel to do that. Minimum of number 8 wire, 6 would be better. 3 number 6 and a 10 ground fed by 50A breaker to a 6 space main lug panel. You will need to ground rod. Take a look at this site for options then get back for details.

Why does the code require a panel in the shed? I guess I dont see why its a safety hazard to feed the shed from the house panel and just set a j-box in the shed. I will however use a panel in the shed as you mentioned. Could you please site the code sections that require the panel in the shed. I tore through the code book for an hour and couldnt find anything. Thanks.

Question? If your running a dryer outlet out to the shed and some lights how can you do that on two breaker openings in your main panel? The dryer outlet is for 220v power shich would need the two breaker slots you said you had in your main panel. The lights would require a breaker too. Now if you only have to spots then you would have to have a subpanel somewhere along the line fed from the main one to supply these items. Now maybe I missed something in your post that is why I'm asking.

Joe, I am sure the quote John gave you contains the info, but you can only provide one feed to the garage. In order to get what you want to do it takes at least 2 circuits.

correct, SQ D or Homeline 6 space mainlug panel is cheap and if I was doing it I would put one circuit for lights, one with a recept with gfci on a 20A and the 30 on a double pole for the dryer. That leaves 2 spaces left for future stuff. Now your only choice is size and type of wire.
