knob&hob Q

Not sure if I spelled that right but here it goes.I got that wireing running through a floor joice and at the end of the joice that meets up with the main beam of the house the joice is split in 2 places. There is some support left but i would like to fix this by joining a2x8x4 on the sides of the joice. But to do this i have to cut the old wireing pull it back through the joice ,do my repair than reconect. After i cut the wire i will need to splice in some wire what can i use for wireing? I do plan on up grading the wireing but not now no money yet to do this. The joice thing is bumming me out.The joice is supported about 3 feet away from the main beam with framing i have done so far for a hallway.Should i repair the joice now or can i waite a few months. Thanks for the help.Don

What type of joist is it and where is it located?---A floor-joist that supports the floor on the first- floor and spans across the basement, or a ceiling joist that spans across the second-floor ceiling area.? Is the "main beam" a girder in the basement on which the floor-joists for the first floor bear?

Is it possible to replace the entire run from the device before the joist and the first device after the joint? Much better idea if possible. Is there any slack in the esisting wires?
As for the repairing the joist that would depend on just how bad it is and if you are of the opion it is safe. What type of joist is it?Where in the house is it located? How long has these cracks been there? What caused the cracks?

Thanks for the quick replys My home is 50 years old and a 2 story. The joist is on the first floor part of it is notch out to sit on the beam that runs from one end to the outher end of the house. The cracks are about 1 foot long maybe 1/4 inch wide 2 of them. How long have they been there no clue.I had just took down some of the ceiling to install resest lighting then saw it the wireing has no slack, i could be worrying over nothing but being a first time home owner it bums me out lol.also the one crack is close to the lower part of the floor joice and the outher half way up.Thanks again gents.

For peace of mind, prop a couple of 2x4s under the joist until you have the money and time to repair it correctly, including a proper replacement of the wire.

Actually, it depends on where you live as far as the knob and tube wiring is. I grew up in a VERY rural area. And they used Knob and tube well into the 50's (they could get it cheap, and they had no inspections) When I helped my dad rewire the house in the early 70's, we still had access to everything we needed to replace old knob and tube with new knob and tube... I learned from that, never assume anything.

I have a joint Army/Air Force technical manual on Interior Wiring from 1968 that includes Knob & Tube as an option.
