Black soot around outlet

We have a 1930s home - not sure if the electric wiring has ever been redone or not (though it passed inspection when we bought it last year), however I have my telephone and answering machine plugged into one outlet and when I unplugged them to clean the other day, there was black soot all over the outlet cover. What does this mean? Is it something to worry about?
Thanks!

Telephones and answering machines use little power. I'm guessing that the soot did not come from the electrical system, but perhaps from some other environmental condition in your house (cooking? HVAC?).

I agre. Got to the receptacle on a windy day and see if you can feel air blowing. That would be the source of the black soot.
