electrical- adding new light to 3-way

i would like to add a new light to an existing 3-way switch. there is a light down, one in the stairway and hopefully a new one at the top of the stairs. question is where do we hook up? is it to the switch upstairs or to one of the existing lights? (ie. one in stairwell)

thanks much.

The easiest way will be to connect to one of the existing lights. But beware, there are other considerations, such as whether you have a box you can make joints in.

If you can get a wire from the fixture in your stairwell to your new location that would be the most foolproof solution. If you have a 2-wire cable coming out of your upstairs switch box and going to the stairwell fixture then you can "tap" off the wire with a junction box. If your "switchleg" comes out of the downstairs switch AND you can't access either of the two fixtures to get a wire up to your new location then you are probably scr#@ed.
