GFCI Plug - Dusk to Dawn Problem

We've got an outdoor light hooked to a dusk to dawn sensor. I put a GFCI outlet between the light and the sensor so I could plug in other outdoor items that I only want to light at night.

This week I plugged in a portable sign to the GFCI outlet. The sign has GFCI on the plug. Problem is, when the circuit is off (during daylight) the GFCI on the plug trips, indicating ground was interrupted. But the GFCI on the outlet never trips.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot/rewire?

Start by plugging the sign into another outlet to see if it is the sign.

My guess is it is a tie-in problem at the GFCI. Check your line/load connections.

Changing wiring in an outlet box

I have an outlet with wiring similar to the description on the following page [url]http://doityourself.com/electric/electconnectb.htm[/url] titled "Splitting a receptacle on a push terminal." How do I change the wiring to keep constant power to the outlet, in the middle of the run instalation, and have power going through the switch to a new wire that I placed going to a new light fixture? This is what I tried: In the outlet box: From the three cables coming into the box, I connected all of the black wires and pigtailed from there (extra 6" wire) to the outlet. I did the same with the white wires and the ground wires. In the switch box: I changed the wiring to have normal single switch wiring (black into and out of the switch with the white and ground wires pigtailed separately). This new wire out of the switch box goes to the new light. Result: The light works great with the switch, but now the outlet does not work. Maybe the power is just bypassing the outlet and going straight to the switch??? Thanks for any advise.Read More

Are there any advantages/disadvantages between the two in a suspended ceiling application? I have standard fixtures laying around I could use, but I'm guessing I would need some sort of special extended box to use with the ceiling. Appreciate any thoughts.Read More
