size of wire for oven

I'm wiring my house and don't have a oven yet, but most likely will have an average freestanding range.. A book at lowes says I can use 10/3 wire? If I don't get one with a elec. cleaning mode. I hoping this would be correct. Because that's what I just ran..I looked at the ovens for power useage and don't understand, (11.5kw 3wire and 3kw) any input on this? Buckman

10/3 can be protected with a 30 amp breaker and is appropriate for a clothes dryer. Most ranges are wired with 8/3 or even 6/3 and are protected by 40 and 50 amp breakers.

11.5kw = 11,500 watts = 47.91 amps @ 240 volts.

Sounds like you need a 6/3 cable with a 50 amp breaker.

To add to Hotarc's post.....You need 6/3 w/ground cable, a 2 pole 50 amp breaker, a 2 gang box, and a 50 amp 4 wire receptacle.

If I buy enough 6/3 for my oven, can I also use it for my heat pump? since I was told that is what I need there. Or should I buy 6/2, because I'll have an extra not used wire in 6/3? thanks Buckman

Take Tex's advice. No do what Tex says.

Also take note of the instructions on your new unit and remove the internal bonding.

Is this a stove or a built-in oven or a built-in oven/micro combo.

If the latter two then a metal four square with a ground pigtail will be needed.
