3 way switch issue

I converted a 2 way switch to a 3 way switch by wunning 14/3 over to a new box on the other side of the basement. The 3 way switch seem to work like there supposed to except for something that is driving my wife crazy.

The lights are on when both switches are in the down position or both in the up position. I was wondering if there is a way to change something so that the lights are off when both switches are down

Just wondering

You have two options. (1) The simplest is to pull either (but just one) switch out of the box, flip it upside down and put it back in the box. This doesn't even require any wiring changes. (2) Or you can just pull either (but just one) switch out of the box, switch the two wires on the two traveler (non-black non-green) screws, and put it back in without flipping it over. This second approach might be easier if the box is very crowded.

Your wife sounds a detail-oriented. I'll bet that, after you fix this, if the light is off and both switches are up, she'll put both switches down to make it "right".
