outdoor electrical fixture

I am trying to install an outdoor light on a brick front. Do I need to install a junction box in the brick or can i attach the light right to the brick? If I need to install a junction box, do I have to make a hole in the brick & mortar it in?

If it was my house, I would go to the effort to put a junction box in place. It gives you room for proper wiring practices, it keeps you in code, and makes it much easier to replace the fixture down the road.

If you use a pancake box the fixture should completely cover it when installed.
