Hello Helixpoint!
I am going to copy this thread into the electrical forum, as someone there may be able to point you in the right direction. I, myself, do not have enough experience with large generators to be of any service to you. Sorry.

Is your intention to backup the entire house, or just some circuits during an outage. If only some circuits, will they vary from time to time, or predictable. Do you want the generator to auto start and take on the load, or have it be manual?
Tell us what you want to do, and we will suggest.

Hope this helps
Ive been installing briggs and stratton generators for a while now and have had no complaints. They make three packages; manual, semi-auto, and fully auto. All varying in price. With the cheapest at around $2000.00.
