Question Who writes the contract?

Hello everyone...

I've read and been told about the importance of a contract but who is responsible for putting it together? The homeowner or the contractor? Is it customary for the contractor to present the homeowner with the contract covering the work that is expected, terms, warranties, payment, payment schedule etc? Then the homeowners make sure the contract addresses the above items and anything else of concern before signing. Is this how it plays out? Are there any web sites that address this and or has sample contracts? Do any of you have any sample contracts that you would be willing to share? I appreciate your help.

PS We do not have a general contractor. We plan to contact each specialist - electrician, dry waller, window installer, floor layer, roofer etc ourselves. Maybe this is a mistake?

Most legitimate contractors will provide you with a proposal outlining the scope of their work and a contract to sign before they begin the work. The need for the contract is a 2 way street.

Good luck on your project. Allow about 5 times longer than you are anticipating if you are the general contractor. It will also be your responsibility to get in your subs in the proper order.
