flouresent fixtures

Hello,
i'm a complete rookie when it comes to electricity and was hoping you guys could help me out... I have two fixtures down stairs in a drop ceiling and they're on the same switch. They both just barely come on and kind of humm. I've put new bulbs in them and nothing. How should I take care of this ? I can't afford to hire someone and was hoping to fix it alone with your help?

Thanks for your time,
khf

sounds like you have bad ballasts. you need to turn off the power, and clip the wires to the ballasts one at a time. clip them close to the ballast, leaving around 1" or so. take the ballast to a local elect supply, or HD or Lowes, and have them match up the ballast you have with a new one. then all you need to do is re splice the wires to the coresponding colors, and there you are. you will also need to buy some small wirenuts probably the small blue or orange ones. the black and white should be the last splices you make. then replace lamps, and turn power back on.
Good Luck!!
