Recessed Lights in my Attic

Recessed Lights in my Attic
I had recessed lights installed in my home 2 years ago. We had a contractor in our attic yesterday, who tells us that the fixtures used are not "enclosed" but are the ones that should have been used between floors. Because these are not specifically for attic installation, we are loosing a lot of heat in our upper rooms. (which is why he was in the attic to begin with) He says that the "attic" recessed lights have hoods on them to prevent attic air from robbing the heat and cooling from our bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floor. Can I purchase these "hoods" or do something to correct the situation without having to change all of these fixtures. I have about 17 of them in my ceiling now!
Please Help! Thanks PhilC

You would need to change the fixtures to a type IC ( insulation contact ) recessed can. These type cans are sealed . I am not aware of any aftermarket " hoods " that could be installed that wouldn't create a fire hazard by making the fixture overheat.

Although an IC rating is necessary, I don't believe it is sufficient for your goals. You also need one that is rated airtight.
As to your real question as to what you could do with the ones you have, I can think of a number of ideas. I just don't know if any of them are safe.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, that is not the answer we hoped for. If there is anyother way of warming up the downstairs, short of replacing all of the lights, we would love to know. The electrician, although licensed, did this work 2 years ago and will not come back. Is this a code violation....his installing these from the attic and covering them with insullation?
